On December 14, 2024, six dedicated members of our school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer at Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg, a local nonprofit committed to providing safe, refurbished bicycles for members of the community—especially children.
During their visit, the students rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work, focusing on restoring children’s bikes. Under the guidance of the organization’s experienced mechanics and volunteers, the group learned the ins and outs of bicycle repair: from assessing frame integrity and replacing worn-out brakes, to adjusting handlebars and ensuring each set of tires was safe and sturdy. By the end of the day, these six students had successfully restored eight bikes, each one destined to bring a smile to a child’s face.
This hands-on experience allowed the students not only to sharpen their technical and problem-solving skills, but also to better understand the importance of community service. They discovered that rebuilding a bike isn’t just about tightening screws and lubricating chains—it’s about giving back, empowering others, and making a meaningful difference right here at home.
As the students reflected on their day, they expressed gratitude for the opportunity to help others and gain a new appreciation for the work that goes into maintaining the simple joy of riding a bike. Their efforts at Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg serve as a reminder that even a small group of dedicated volunteers can create a significant, positive impact in their community.
Our FBLA students’ work is a shining example of the lasting impact that comes from putting skills into action and supporting local organizations. We’re so proud of their efforts, and we can’t wait to see how they continue making a difference in the future.
